Southern Theater
The Southern Theatre is a 112 year old active theatre located in Columbus, Ohio. It is a 933 seat historical theatre that shows vaudeville, theatre productions, local events, dance and even silent movies. It retains its original fame by hosting many performing arts events.
The theatre was commissioned by some downtown business men who wanted to up lift the south side after a series of fire accidents at the other theatres. Hence, The Southern Theatre literally rose from the ashes like a phoenix and kept going for another century. The theater is an engineering marvel.
Its jewel box structure with arched ceilings gave it the most modern acoustics of its time. The fear of fire made engineers use fireproof construction material lending it a modern design ahead of it's times. Moreover the Southern Theatre had its own electricity and water supply making it totally independent and efficiently functional.
The Southern Theatre has hosted many grand events in its fabulous history. Broadway shows like In Gay New York, An American Beauty lent the theatre its classical style. The initial years of the Southern Theatre had some of the greatest names in Show Dom associated with it. Lionel Barrymore, John Philip Sousa, W.C Fields and Maude Adams are some of the famous personalities who performed at the Southern Theatre.
Even in its initial days, The Southern Theatre was claimed to be the most modern commercial building with engineering ahead of it's time. Though during the 1970's it was close to be converted but is still running after massive renovations in 1998 led by CAPA.
Now CAPA organizes regular performing acts, theatre shows, stage shows local and international events in the place. The Southern Theatre is one of the last remaining pieces of the history that is highly treasured and becomes one of the favorite destinations of visitors to travel to Columbus OH.
