Statehouse
To have a nice dining experience when travel Columbus Ohio, you won't miss the Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. It is a government building which houses dignitary posts such as the governor, lieutenant governor, auditor and the treasurer. It also is the site for the State General Assembly. It is the most important building in the state of Ohio.
The Statehouse was designed and built in 1838 under the supervision of Henry Walter. The design for the building was chosen through a contest of entries out of which three were chosen. Henry Walter was the first prize holder. But the construction got a setback when the capitol moved out of Columbus due to an expiring legislature.
Work resumed again in 1848 only to be stopped shortly due to an epidemic. When the epidemic subsided work resumed and went on steadily until 1852, when a fire consumed the two story old capitol building after which the construction got a major boost. Several changes in architecture later, the building was finally completed in 1861
The architecture reminisces of the Greek architecture and neo-classical thought. Such an ideology was prevalent in the architects of the 18th century with newfound access to Greek architectures due to the recent excavations. The Statehouse is not a single embodiment of Greek architecture but a plethora of styles mixed with day to day needs of government functioning.
It has a balanced architecture and functional areas. There are art works strewn all across the Statehouse made on a large scale. A large marble bust of A. Lincoln also exists. The portraits of former governors adorn the walls of the Statehouse giving it an old and grandiose outlook.
The Statehouse is bold and artistic at the same time and it definitely serves its purpose as a power house for the state. The tours of the Statehouse for Columbus travel are easily available and are a golden opportunity to peek in the history of Ohio.
