Columbus continued to prosper and grow in the twentieth century which may be attributed to several factors, and gradually earned the tag of being a brilliantly illuminated city in the country owing to its lit arches. But later, these arches started to disappear, till the city started to construct them once again to mark and celebrate the city's past. The city witnessed growth in its industrial centre and, as a result, boosted the economy of United States of America.
Today, the Columbus city has a total population of over seven lakh, symbolising the growth as a result of the revolution in industries related to the construction sector. In addition, it gained tremendous exponential growth by annexing surrounding communities and land since 1950. During 1950, the city had a border of forty square miles but today, its border extends up to two hundred square miles.
Columbus has a growing cultural life represented by the Columbus Museum of Art, Centre for Ohio Science and the Ohio Historical Society. Also, the city encompasses one of the best zoos in the world and it also served as a home for the Ohio State Buckeyes, national champions during NCAA Football 2003.
With the construction of the interstate highway, the city continued its rapid development, especially in its suburban sections. The Columbus economy had no impact from current recession as it effected hugely on the rest of the country, including business merchants, corporate residents and political leaders.
