Light rail transit system of Columbus and its significance
The light rail system is the common name of light rail transit system (LRT). It is a public transportation system for urban areas and in comparison to metros and heavy rails, their speed and capacity is lower. But in both the respects they are better speed and capacity than the traditional trams. The light rail system term came into existence during 1972 as UMTA or U.S. Urban Mass Transportation Administration used the term for referring to streetcar transformations.
Though UMTA wanted to use the term city rail, the term light rail scored higher than that. The name shows its usage for fast movement and also light loads.
