Italian Communities in Columbus
The Italian Village is one of the most notable Italian communities in Columbus. The Italian Village is one of the first suburbs Columbus set up after the city was annexed to the City of Columbus in 1862.
It is a mixture of Italian and Irish immigrants who originally populated the area to find work in quarries, construction trade, and railways. The neighborhood owes its name to the Italian architecture style, many buildings and the Baptist St. John Catholic Church, where mass spoken in Italian.
Italian village flourished during the 1940s because of the accessibility of shops, goods and services and the proximity to the center. The area began to decline after the Second World War, as some residents moved to newer suburbs.
