Events that shook Columbus during the 19th Century
Before First World War, there were two events which shook the stability of the city of Columbus. Firstly, an event, known as Streetcar strike, occurred in 1910 and lasted till the year end, resulting in destruction of public and government properties. Consequently, in order to maintain law and order, the National Guard was pressed into service. Thus, the strike ended after the promise of concession from the company.
After three years, the second event, Scioto river floods, killed more than hundred people and left over twenty thousands people stranded and homeless, resulting in an estimated damage of nine millions. Later, the city defended these events by maintaining its cultural, political and economical status as the capital city.
