Columbus was officially chartered as a city on 3rd March, 1834 and initially had a population of over three thousand five hundred individuals. Later that day, the city legislature passed an act which brought control of the judicial authority to the City Mayor and the legislative assembly was controlled by the City Council.
Subsequently, the elections were held in the same year and John Brooks was elected as the first Mayor of Columbus. During 1850, the Xenia and Columbus railroad was established as the first railroad of the city, followed by others.
