German Village

What if you will be offered a walk in the past of Ohio City? The very mention of historical place that still continues to have an aura of past looming over it is a sheer sense of adventure. This is the kind of excitement is rendered when one visits the south of the downtown Columbus which is popularly called as German Village. It was founded by the German immigrants in 1800s and is one of the largest privately owned and financed neighborhoods of the US.

The German village Columbus of the Brewery District is located in the east of S. High Street, in between Greenlawn Avenue and Livingstone Avenue. Owing to World War I and growing anti-German sentiments, German immigrants left the place and the district was rendered barren for a decade to be restored back to its original state in 1960.

You can still witness the destructed edifices amidst the restored sites. There are altogether 1600 buildings that have been restored in the whole span of 233 acres of the German village.

The German Village Commission and the German Village Society was set up to take over the responsibility of resurrection of this historical place. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Columbus, Ohio which attracts people for Columbus travel from various coterie including historicist, archeologists, students, theologians, and genealogists.
