Columbus ships USS Columbus is a Los Angeles-Class submarine and was the fourth ship that was named for the U.S. Navy. The contract to build her was given to Electric Boat division of General Dynamics on 21st. March 1986. The ship was launched on 1st. August 1992 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Margaret DeMars. Columbus ships completed a post Shipyard availability after construction and shakedown operations.

In September 1994, it also conducted an interfleet transfer to Hawaii and Pearl Harbor and joined the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Columbus ships were deployed to pacific and had conducted a variety of operations along with making ports visits in Hong Kong, Guam, Subic Bay and Yokosuka in Japan. The submarine was the first of its kind to be equipped with BYG-1 Fire control system.

Columbus ships had also conducted two successful test launches of cruise missiles Tactical Tomahawk underway in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. Late in 2003 it departed from Pearl Harbor to take part in the Annual-Ex 2003 exercise with Japanese Navy Defense Force. On April 2006, seven of its crew members were also charged with offences of assaulting, dereliction and hazing two of their shipmates, which led the ship to controversies.

The accused ranged from petty officer third class to chief chef and resulted in the dismissal of the commanding officer Charles Marquez. On December 2006, Columbus ships was relocated back to Pearl Harbor at the end of the depot modernization period. During its six month deployment period the ship supported security operations and also conducted several port visits.

It also won a 1 battle efficiency award for best demonstration of technical proficiencies with continual missions throughout the year. Apart from this the U.S. navy also had USS Columbus Heavy cruiser that was commissioned at the end of world war II.
